Black Arts Group ShowDr. Allen Bearden, an artist and 30-year arts educator is the featured artist in NoHo Gallery LA’s exhibit The Black Arts — a collection of art representing a variety of mediums and styles saluting our African-American and Afro-Caribbean heritage. The Gallery is also honored to debut Special Guest Artist Metellus Bekens’ work in the U.S. – an exiled Haitian artist who has kept himself and his family alive through his art. This exhibition opened January 25th and runs until February 26th. There is also an artist reception on Tuesday, February 7 from 6-10PM that will feature jazz music.

Winter Ball

Winter BallThe Da Vinci Gallery, in collaboration with the Baseball Reliquary, presents an exhibition of baseball-inspired artworks, including Ben Sakoguchi’s "Orange Crate Label Series: The Unauthorized History of Baseball in 100-odd Paintings." Also featured are paintings and mixed-media works by Michael Guccione, Greg Jezewski, and Curtis Wright.

In conjunction with this art exhibition and in celebration of African American History Month, the Baseball Reliquary will also present a display exploring aspects of the Negro Leagues and African-American baseball history from February 6-March 4, 2006 in the Los Angeles City College Library.

Spotlight: 2006 Pan African Film and Arts Festival

Tsotsi - Premiering at the 2006 Pan African Film Festival
At the Magic Johnson Theatres and Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, the 2006 Pan African Film and Arts Festival will take place from February 9th to February 20th. The 2006 PAFF program will showcase a diverse selection of Black films inclusive of features, shorts, documentaries as well as studio/network releases. The PAFF is dedicated to the promotion of cultural and racial tolerance and understanding through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression. The PAFF will feature panel discussions, industry workshops and seminars in addition to its film showcases. There will also be Children Festivals occurring on Saturdays, February 12th and 19th and a SpokenWordFest February 11th and 18th.

Philippe Lefebvre performs on the Rosales pipe organ at St. Cyril of Jerusalem Church in Encino. A master of improvisation at the organ, Lefebvre is Titular Organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, France. His program includes music of Franck, Liszt, Mendelssohn and Durufle, and an improvisation.

Alice Coltrane recently released her first album in 26 years. Continuing her late husband John Coltrane’s investigations of Eastern music, “Translinear Light” showcases the “undiminished brio that Coltrane brings to the keyboard” [The New Yorker] particularly her ethereal Wurlitzer organ and synthesizer playing. In this world premiere event, Coltrane performs with her sons Ravi and Oran. Local vocal talent Dwight Trible and his group will open.

First Congregational Church of Los Angeles presents Organist Bradley Welch. Welch is a graduate of Yale University School of Music and is recipient of the Horatio Parker Memorial Prize, the Charles Ives Prize and the Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize. He is currently Artist-in-Residence at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX.
