Behind the Altar: Retablos
From Sept. 22 to Dec. 31, the Craft and Folk Art
Museum presents "Behind the Altar",
an exhibit of retablos, the colorful Catholic
iconography indigenous to Mexico. Retablos are
small oil paintings on metal or wood, depicting
one of the hundreds of Catholic saints invoked
for benediction. With its roots deeply embedded
in Spanish proletariat heritage, the retablo art
form took form in post conquest Mexico and flourished
in the late 19th century.
