Hungry Hearts

Hungry HeartsFilmed in 1922 in Manhattan, Hungry Hearts is based on the short stories of Anzia Yezierska, one of the first immigrant authors to write about American Jewish women for a mainstream audience. Screening on November 6th at the Silent Movie Theatre, this bittersweet Samuel Goldwyn classic follows the Levin family as they emigrate from Eastern Europe with hope for a better life in America, only to discover the hardships of settling in the New World.

Artivist Film Festival & Awards

ArtivistThis first international film festival dedicated to addressing the importance of art and activism in the global community hopes to strengthen the voice of international activist artists - "Artivists" - while raising public awareness for social global causes. During this four-day festival at The Egyptian Theatre, 65 international films will be screened from November 9th to the 12th.

From the mind of Douglas Adams comes DIRK: a ghost/horror/detective/time-travel/romantic comedy/epic that begins with a seemingly innocent conjuring trick and ends with the most devastating secret of humankind! All this and a musical number!

Douglas Kearney is the editor of Cave Canem IX, an anthology of poetry by emerging and established African American poets. Gary Soto is the author of ten poetry collections for adults, most notably New and Selected Poems.

He is also an influential critic of poetry, genre fiction, rock music, and comics and graphic novels. He teaches at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

ALOUD at Central Library presents a lecture and panel discussion with Eileen Myles, Marjorie Perloff, and Jason Shinder at the Mark Taper Auditorium. Bill Morgan's biography celebrates one of America's most influential poets. Join in a discussion of Ginsberg's epic poem "Howl" on the 50th anniversary of its publication.
