Join Dr. Joshua Holo, Associate Professor of Jewish History and Director, Louchheim School of Judaic Studies, and Dr. William G. Thalmann, Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, in a conversation moderated by Dr. Selma Holo, Director of the College’s International Museum Institute and USC Fisher Gallery, about heaven and hell in the Judaic and Christian traditions. Michael Mazur’s haunting etchings of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno will surround the audience during this rapturous discussion. Joshua Holo studies the Medieval Jews of the Mediterranean, focusing on the Christian realm. He is currently finishing up his first book, Byzantine Jewry in the Mediterranean Economy, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press. At Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, he holds the position of Associate Professor of Jewish History on the Los Angeles campus, and he directs the Louchheim School of Judaic Studies, which serves at the Judaic Studies program for the University of Southern California. Professor Thalmann researches Greek epic and drama at the University of Southern California. In particular, he studies how performances of ancient texts were the occasion for the convergence of class and gender discourses and the role of these texts within contemporary social and political processes. He is also interested in approaches to ancient cultures through anthropology and political theory. His publications include Conventions of Form and Thought in Early Greek Epic Poetr
