Night Sail is one of the largest works of public art in downtown and it is the largest outdoor work by the late, internationally recognized sculptor Louise Nevelson. The artist joined a collage of elements on one frame as this style became representational of Nevelson’s work. Another uniting element of her sculptures is her use of the color black. Black, as Nevelson puts it, “contains all color…It [isn’t] a negation of color. It [is] an acceptance. Black is the most aristocratic color of all, the only aristocratic color." The structure weighs 33 tons and was commissioned for more than $100,000
