On the 1st floor plaza in the Wells Fargo Building near the elevators, you will see the large sculptures that constitute North, East, South, West by Michael Heizer in 1981. The piece is made of burnished stainless steel produced at the Utility Sheet Metal Company in Sun Valley. “North” is represented by the two stacked rectangles, “East” is symbolized by the upright cone, “South” in contrast is the reversed cone while “West” takes the form of a wedge. The work’s massive size redirects movement in the front court causing the viewer to physically react to the different pieces of the sculpture.
