ZOCALO:
Central Library Lectures |
| "Our
first date was going to see the new Editor of
the Editorial Page of the LA Times—for free."
That could be your intro to the story about your
innovative and delightfully nerdy Valentine's
outing. Zócalo and the Los Angeles Public
Library put on a vibrant series of programs that
feature thinkers and doers speaking on some of
the most pressing topics of the day. Zócalo—"Public
Square" in Spanish—seeks to create
a non-partisan and multiethnic forum where participants
can enjoy a rare opportunity for intellectual
fellowship. The February 15 lecture features Andres
Martinez, the former New York Times editorialist
and Pulitzer Prize finalist discussing his vision
for the Times.
February 15, 2005 7-8:30pm. FREE
Reservations required.

An Ancient Love Potion:
Chocolate and Chilies |
Controversy exists over whether the word mole
came from moli, the Aztec word
for ground spices, or whether it is
derived from the Spanish word 'to mix,' or
moler. Either way, the sweet and spicy
accents of different chilies, chocolates and
nuts mix impeccably in moles. Different
types of mole are cooked on an everyday
basis all over L.A.; go to the workshop together
and learn how to try it out for yourself.
Even if you don't fall in love with the person
you go with, you'll fall in love with the
taste. |

Sunday, February 13, 2005 2-4p.m.
$15 for museum members; $30 for non-members
Note: Take Metro Gold Line to the
Southwest Museum station.

Spotlight:
National Women's Heart Day Health Fair
|
| |
Metro's
Red Line, Valentine's Day, and the Heart-to-Heart
Foundation are all coming together for people's
hearts. On Friday, February 18, 2005, on National
Woman’s Heart Day, Los Angeles women will have
a first time ever opportunity to get free heart
screenings with on-the-spot results and advice
about the risk factors of heart disease at a
Health Fair, to be held at the Hollywood
Palladium from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Sponsored
by Washington, DC-based Sister to Sister – Everyone
Has a Heart Foundation, Inc.®, the annual
campaign is geared to raise awareness among
women that heart disease is the #1 killer of
women, as well as to alert and educate about
risk factors associated with heart disease in
women. The campaign culminates on National Woman’s
Heart Day, with Health Fairs held on that day
across the country in 12 cities and thousands
of women getting heart screenings in only six
hours. (FREE) |
Note:
Take Metro Red Line to the Sunset and Vine station.
