Nederlander Concerts welcomes Celtic Woman to the Greek Theatre, Saturday May 17. Celtic Woman has been winning over audiences worldwide since their March 2005 debut. Their popularity in the U.S. is thanks in part to their first PBS special, which has been aired over 3400 times on 316 PBS stations to date. Their 2005 self-titled CD and DVD have been certified platinum, and 2007's A New Journey: Live from Slane Castle, Ireland DVD and A New Journey CD have both been certified platinum. Celtic Woman commanded the #1 spot on the Billboard World Music chart for over 90 consecutive weeks. The group has played more than five hugely successful U.S. concert tours, including multiple sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall. 'A New Journey' contains selections from both of the group's platinum albums, Celtic Woman and A New Journey. The repertoire is an unforgettable collection of contemporary hits, classical favorites, Irish standards and original composition written especially for the soloists. Celtic Woman's 'A New Journey', like all the best journeys, is an experience you will never forget. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=16802 May 17 May 17 May 17 3/11/2008 10:21:23 AM Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles: Route 66 (2-for-1 offer)
May 17
DISCOUNT OFFER: Get 2-for-1 tickets on this tour when you first send an email in support of the LA Public Library's budget not being slashed at Esotouric founders Kim and Richard's http://www.savelapl.org website. Esotouric's ''Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles'' tours each explore themes of industry, infrastructure, architecture and the built environment. In this third installment in our ongoing architecture series, we explore California's Mother Road and the building of its dream. The dream manifests at the turn of the 20th century as we explore how the climate was sold, the growth of the citrus industry and Tuberculosis hospitals. Then come the programmatic roadside architecture of the 1920s and 1930s and postwar V-8 visions fueled by gasoline and good climate (too bad you can't run an engine on it). The Reyner Banham tour series is dedicated to revealing greater L.A.'s infrastructure, history, the built and natural environment, transportation corridors, drive-ins, attractions and oddities. This tour will focus on the built environment along the Mother Road with an emphasis on old and historic alignments of Route 66 as well as signage. Highlights of the Route 66 tour include: Aztec Hotel, Covina Bowl, Ward Waldo farms, Monrovia AKA Bungalotopia, gravel pit tour. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition ENDANGERED SPECIES will benefit the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA. The public is invited to a reception on Saturday, April 19, from 2 – 6 P.M. Empirical evidence that the world's natural balance is severely compromised is hard to refute at this point. ENDANGERED SPECIES includes artwork addressing the following related themes: 1) extinct/endangered/threatened species; 2) nature's beauty and fragility; 3) humanity's impact on the environment; and 4) contemporary threats to the ''ethnosphere, a term created by Wade Davis, explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society. In his book, Light at the Edge of the World, he defines ''ethnosphere'' as ''the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths, and intuitions brought into being by the human imagination since the dawn of consciousness.'' ''We may not think of these things as global resources -- like air, water, and green life -- but they truly are. And they, too, are threatened by rampant modernization and globalization,'' write the editors of the Utne Reader in a March 6, on-line article about Davis by Juniper Glass. ENDANGERED SPECIES artists: Ulla Anobile (paper mache); Esther Barr (embossed copper); Robin Bevan (cut paper); Danny Gonzalez (block prints); Stefani Gruenberg (ceramics); Linda Jaques (giclee prints, painting); Jacqueline Marks (ceramics); Denise Monaghan, Joel Nakamura, Terry Powell, Suzanne Saul, Linda Vallejo (painting). http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=16821 Apr 19 May 17 Apr 19 - May 17 3/12/2008 9:32:09 AM A Tribute To Harry James
May 17
Jazz historian and L.A. The City of Los Angeles is studying the feasibility of a streetcar that would travel down the historic Broadway corridor, connecting the Staples Center, L.A. Live, Convention Center and emerging South Park neighborhood in the south to the Disney Concert Hall, Music Center and the Grand Avenue Project to the north. Streetcars have also been proposed in Pasadena, Culver City and Beverly Hills, Warner Center, Long Beach, Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Irvine. We are staging a streetcar workshop at the historic Orpheum Theatre, where local streetcar advocates, neighborhood councils, residents, and property and business owners will talk with national streetcar experts about: • How streetcars compare to other modes of transportation; • What streetcars have done for residents and property and business owners in cities ranging from Portland to Tampa to tiny Kenosha, Wisconsin; • How streetcars can leverage the value of urban real estate, and help market higher-density development and a ''green'' lifestyle; • How streetcars shape development and reduce driving and greenhouse gas emissions; • How communities can profit from zoning for density, intensity and intimacy near the streetcar line, and use the money to help achieve public goals including affordability and parks; • Political and funding strategies that get robust streetcar systems built; • AND HOW LOS ANGELES AND OTHER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COMMUNITIES CAN BUILD THEIR OWN STREETCAR SYSTEMS. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=17559 May 22 May 22 May 22 5/6/2008 10:32:24 AM Frog Belly Rat Bone
May 24
Frog Belly Rat Bone continues its tour with a free performance in Orange County! Kennedy, the revolutionary Democratic convention, and the violent Olympics in Mexico City. For the fifth year, Works in Progress, which presents stage adaptations of contemporary history, will explore each of these events in its new series 1968: Year that Rocked! The fourth work of this series, MEXICO CITY, traces the violence and politics that colored the Games of the XIX Olympiad, an ostensibly nonpolitical sports competition. The work examines the street battles that preceded the events and culminates with the silent but powerful protest of two of America's world-class athletes. ''100% OTHER: ARTISTS AND PSYCHO-DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITIONS'' continues yearlong examination of electoral issues at 18th Street Arts Center. In this election year, who will vote, who will be counted, who won't be, who will be left out – and what will be the impact on the future of the nation? 18th Street Arts Center delves into these and other questions in ''100% Other: Artists and Psycho-Demographic Transitions,'' an art exhibition that tracks the connections and separations between our changing cultural landscape and our oftentimes lagging civic outcomes. The exhibition, which opens April 12 and continues through June 13, forms the second part of ''Future of Nations,'' 18th Street's yearlong examination of issues related to the 2008 presidential campaign. It is curated by Tyler Stallings and includes works by Matthew Bryant, Cheryl Gilge, Perry Vasquez, Reggie Woolery, and Yasuko, as well as ''Rich,'' an installation in the project room by Kyungmi Shin, 18th Street 2008 artist fellow. 18th Street programs are supported (in part) by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Australia Council for the Arts, California Community Foundation, Durfee Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, Jumex Foundation, L.A. County Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Peter Norton Family Foundation, Santa Monica Department of Cultural Affairs Division, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. The Actors' Gang's critically acclaimed production of George Orwell's 1984 returns to Los Angeles as part of an extensive national and international tour that has traveled to cities across the U.S. and to Hong Kong, Melbourne and Athens. Directed by Academy Award-winning actor and Actors' Gang artistic director Tim Robbins, 1984 tells of a world where people fear that their opinions cannot be expressed freely, where citizens are monitored at the government's discretion, where leaders are not held accountable for their deceptions, and where perpetual war is waged against an unseen enemy. Hosted by pop critics Kim Cooper and Gene Sculatti, departs from Amoeba and explores the musical history of Hollywood and the Sunset Strip through visits to celebrated nightclubs, recording studios, record label offices and other places of subcultural importance. Take a fascinating journey back in time, from the mid 1960s through punk, when LA was ground zero of a series of cultural explosions. Artists featured include Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass, The Beach Boys, The Buffalo Springfield, The Doors, The Bobby Fuller 4, The Germs, The Grassroots, Jan and Dean, Janis Joplin, Arthur Lee and Love, The Mamas and Papas, The Monkees, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Sonny and Cher, Phil Spector, Iggy and the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, and many, many more. Illustrated with an elaborate slide and film presentation featuring rare vintage photos, album art, concert ads and ephemera, and hosted by a pair of historically minded music fiends eager to share fascinating tales, it's a must for rock fans and curious locals. Most tours feature special guest stars from the world of pop history, and every passenger goes home with a generous Amoeba Music swag bag and free copy of Scram, a journal of unpopular culture. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=15138 Oct 21 Oct 21 Oct 21 4/9/2008 10:34:31 AM Cal Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall: America The Beautiful
Jun 29
America The Beautiful music from sea to shining sea. America The Beautiful music from sea to shining sea. Rhapsody In Blue New York, New York Grand Canyon Suite Appalachian Spring California Suite Chicago Mardi Gras Make sure your summer plans include this musical tour of America, conducted by a guide guaranteed to bring the sights--and especially the sounds--of our symphonic journey together to resounding life: Maestro Victor Vener! Cal Phil celebrates the diverse cultures and musics that reflect America's peoples and their unique American lives with an incredible lineup of featured artists: singer James Tormé, son of the legendary Mel Tormé, with his jazz trio, as well as piano virtuoso Norman krieger. You won't want to miss this amazing concert! Playboy Jazz Festival founder Hugh Hefner says James Tormé is a chip off the old block, and a mighty cool block it is. His daddy would be proud. The Washington Post called pianist Norman Krieger an artist of unusual sensitivity with the technical control to do absolutely anything he wants. Cal Phil reinvents the concert for today's listener. With a critically-acclaimed combination of world-class performance and compelling dialogue from the Maestro, Cal Phil brings music into contemporary context and illuminates the connections between diverse musical genres. These Sunday afternoon concerts, unrivaled in their appeal, allow you to beat the heat in style. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=17177 Jun 29 Jun 29 Jun 29 4/8/2008 9:05:57 AM Marina del Rey Summer Concert Series
Aug 21
The popular waterside Marina del Rey Summer Con...
