The pairing of Robert and Chuy in our North Gallery...is an exhibition that is not to be missed. Robert Palacios, a local artist...was born and raised in Los Angeles. At a very young age Robert was fascinated with creating art. Like many artists, Robert draws inspiration and subjects for his paintings...from childhood memories, life experiences, and his American/Latino heritage. Before beginning a painting, Robert sketches out his ideas to set the mood. When the mood and the story are fully realized...he takes those sketches and recreates them onto canvas. Each painting is a vivid story of a world of Robert's making. Like great story tellers, Robert breathes life into his characters with careful thought and unique insight. The viewer is introduced to a cast of characters and subplots...often put into humorous situations...that Robert characterizes as visual narratives of daily life, with a comical twist. Chuy Rangel, a local artist...was born in Santa Paula, California. An activist, designer, muralist, painter, photographer, and sculptor, Chuy grew up in his hometown of Fillmore during the uproar of the Chicano movement. When asked about his work, Chuy explains, I have made it my lifelong endeavor to create a narrative that provokes not only awareness, but a discussion that challenges the social structure in which we live. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=23587 Jun 07 Jul 09 Jun 07 - Jul 09 6/2/2009 11:33:45 AM NoHo Arts District Gateway
Jul 09
The NoHo Gateway, designed by renowned Los Angeles artist Peter Shire, marks the first of three much-anticipated public art works to be completed this... The NoHo Gateway, designed by renowned Los Angeles artist Peter Shire, marks the first of three much-anticipated public art works to be completed this year to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the North Hollywood Redevelopment Project Area. ''I love public art projects because, when they're done right, they give identity and character to a neighborhood. This Peter Shire installation is a special project because it celebrates North Hollywood's contribution to the entertainment industry, so the design relates to the neighborhood. Dedicating this gateway is a great way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the North Hollywood Redevelopment project, which I'm very proud to have in the Fourth Council District.'' – Councilmember Tom LaBonge http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=24244 Jul 09 Jul 09 Jul 09 7/2/2009 12:30:39 PM Andrew Bird plus special guests Ra Ra Riot and Heartless Bastards
Jul 10
Produced in Association with Goldenvoice Singer/songwriter/violinist Andrew Bird will be performing at the Greek Theatre on Friday, July 10 at 7:30 PM with Ra Ra Riot and Heartless Bastards supporting. Produced in Association with Goldenvoice Singer/songwriter/violinist Andrew Bird will be performing at the Greek Theatre on Friday, July 10 at 7:30 PM with Ra Ra Riot and Heartless Bastards supporting. Live reviews from past performances confirmed what Bird's diehard already knew. Bird could be the only performer who's lit up both Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo with a combi-nation of vocals, violin, guitar, glockenspiel and whistling... he uses centuries-old instrumentation to give depth and soul to folk rock, ''said Esquire while the San Jose Mercury News raved, ''Mesmerizing…The records are great, but watching him do it live is something every music fan ought to check out.'' The New York Times marveled, ''At one point he had his guitar slung behind his back, his violin and bow in one hand and a glockenspiel mallet in the other as he whistled into a microphone. He has a sweet, warbling, perfectly in-tune whistle - like a Walt Disney bluebird - that he floats through the rest of his musical constructions, sometimes in unison with the glockenspiel for an otherworldly effect.'' Released January 20 on Fat Possum Records, Noble Beast debuted at #12 on the U.S. album chart, selling over 25,000 units in its opening week. The debut was the highest of the week for an independent label release and second overall. Noble Beast was also that week's highest selling record in Bird's hometown of Chicago. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=22268 Jul 10 Jul 10 Jul 10 6/15/2009 5:25:22 PM Hedda Gabler
Jun 27
A true classic of modern drama, ''Hedda Gabler'' has long thrilled audiences with its spellbinding account of a woman of cunning and means trapped by the stultifying limits of the society s... A true classic of modern drama, ''Hedda Gabler'' has long thrilled audiences with its spellbinding account of a woman of cunning and means trapped by the stultifying limits of the society she inhabits. Hedda, recently married to the bookish and ineffectual academic George Tesman, feels increasingly constrained in a world that seems to have no use for her aspirations and her fierce streak of independence. Visits from her old schoolmate, Thea, and a long-ago love, Eilert, spin her staid existence into a series of schemes and manipulations that herald a possible escape from her life of caged desperation. Is Hedda a shrewd, empowered and intelligent proto-feminist? Or is she merely a calculating, self-absorbed and cruel villain. Ibsen's provocative play offers the curious possibility that she may be both. Paul Wagar's new adaptation shifts the setting to the U.S. East Coast during the 1950's, adding whole new layers to the intrigue. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=23571 Jun 27 Jun 27 Jun 27 5/31/2009 6:42:55 PM Gregorio Luke at the Ford: Life-size Murals of Rufino Tamayo
Jul 12
The spirit and splendor of Mexican landscape and culture will captivate audiences as the elab... In his second show at the gallery, Bondi addresses the stasis of modern existence: how it informs the development of one's character and personality. Bondi's work is improvisational and is in direct contradiction to the personal or emotional impasse brought on by fear for the future or regret for the past which confronts many of us. This obstruction impedes decision making, robbing us of opportunities to grow and change. For the artist, the act of making work serves as a personal catharsis as he wrestles with his own obstructions. The work he creates is an invitation to the viewer to do the same. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=23445 Jul 04 Jul 04 Jul 04 5/23/2009 12:30:04 PM Recent Films by Robert Frank
Jul 26
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Robert Frank's landmark publication, The Americans, and in conjunction with MOCA's exhibition From the Permanent Collection: Robert Frank's The Americans, MOCA collaborates with Cinefamily and Los Angeles Filmforum to present a ra... On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Robert Frank's landmark publication, The Americans, and in conjunction with MOCA's exhibition From the Permanent Collection: Robert Frank's The Americans, MOCA collaborates with Cinefamily and Los Angeles Filmforum to present a rare series of films by and about the renowned photographer and filmmaker. This series is curated by Adam Hyman. Tonight, Los Angeles Filmforum and MOCA present a selection of Robert Frank's newest films, some never screened in Los Angeles. The Present (1996, 24 min.) is a thoughtful self-portrait in which Frank contemplates his relationships, his daughter's death, his son's mental illness, and his own work. In I Remember (1998, color, 5 min., Los Angeles Premiere), Frank recreates his visit to the home of Alfred Stieglitz, with wife June Leaf playing Georgia O'Keeffe, artist Jerome Sother playing Frank, and Frank himself in the role of Stieglitz. Paper Route (2002, 23 min., Los Angeles Premiere) finds Frank accompanying Robert MacMillan on his early-morning paper route in rural Nova Scotia, creating a video portrait of the lives of ordinary people. True Story (2004, color and b/w, 26 min., Los Angeles Premiere), returns to familiar themes of memory and loss, as the artist candidly reflects on his work, his wife's artwork, and letters written by his son, Pablo, who died in 1994. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=24216 Jul 26 Jul 26 Jul 26 7/1/2009 12:37:34 PM The Real Black Dahlia Crime Bus Tour
Nov 01
The Black Dahlia murder in 1947 is the most compelling unsolved crime Los Angeles has ever known. The Black Dahlia murder in 1947 is the most compelling unsolved crime Los Angeles has ever known. What Jack the Ripper is to London, the Torso Killer to Cleveland, the Black Dahlia is to L.A. And yet unlike those other cases, the name Black Dahlia refers not to the killer, but to the victim. What was it about Elizabeth Short that keeps her the object of obsessive fascination by writers, musicians, artists, filmmakers, cops and readers, more than sixty years after she was slain? The Real Black Dahlia Crime Bus Tour seeks to answer this question by intimately exploring the last weeks of Elizabeth Short's life, asking not who killed her? but who was she? The tour takes us from the human hustle of Main Street to the serene lobby of the Biltmore (the second-to-last place she was seen alive), to the newspaper offices and the Greyhound station where she checked her bags, and concludes at the site where her bisected body was found in Leimert Park and with a little known suspect who lived nearby. From the few personal possessions she left behind to the friends who scarcely knew her, from the mass hysteria of the investigation with its fruitless leads, wacko suspects and false confessions, the tour reveals all that's known about this enigmatic black-haired girl who reinvented herself at whim, and shows how she came to be the unfortunate symbol of her time and place. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=15139 Nov 01 Nov 01 Nov 01 7/20/2008 9:59:26 AM Anna In The Tropics
Jul 10
First-ever bilingual adaptation of Anna in the Tropics the Pulitzer Prize winning play by internationally acclaimed writer, Nilo Cruz. First-ever bilingual adaptation of Anna in the Tropics the Pulitzer Prize winning play by internationally acclaimed writer, Nilo Cruz. Anna in the Tropics is a play about love, passion, family, and tradition. It tells the story of a family run Cuban cigar factory in Tampa, Florida, in 1929, that faces the challenges of the American Industrial Revolution. The family finds itself in the midst of personal struggles that threaten their traditional beliefs and values. Because of the story's rich cultural history and its inherently bi-cultural influence, it seems only natural that this play should exist in bilingual form. The play already exists in both English and Spanish independently, so for this production we blended the two scripts together. The patriarchal characters of the play speak mostly in the native language, Spanish. The second generation, which has had the influence of both cultures, uses both languages for very specific reasons. The youngest characters and those most influenced by the American culture, speak mostly in English. This use of language enhances the already beautiful portrayal of a family in crisis and on the verge of losing their own identity. http://www.experiencela.com/calendar/eventmore.asp?key=24207 Jul 10 Jul 10 Jul 10 6/27/2009 11:02:24 AM Shakespeare by the Sea Love's Labour's Lost
Jun 18
Presenting FREE outdoor professional performances of ''Love's Labour's Lost.... Legendary Welsh singer Tom Jones will be performing at the Greek Theatre on Tuesday, August 25 at 8 PM. In his native Wales, he is known as Jones the Voice. Today, he is one of the enduring personalities in the music entertainment business. His unique vocal power, ability and charismatic persona make him one of the most respected, admired and loved performers in modern popular music. Tom has sustained his popularity for more than four decades. His 40-year career has seen highlights including receiving a BRIT Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, a Silver Clef Award for Lifetime Achievement, and in 2009 the ''Hitmaker'' award from the US Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has been animated as himself in The Simpsons, Duck Dodgers and The Emperors New Groove. Other film roles have included parts in Mars Attacks! and Agnes Brown. The live reviews of Tom's shows have been stellar. Vanity Fair exclaimed, ''The audience--a mix of ages and seemingly spanning the spectrum from true believers to ironists--was eager to be taken for a ride, or maybe be just run over. And so we were.
